Sync contacts (CardDAV)

CardDAV is the open standard that keeps the same address book in sync between Foral and the native apps you already use — such as the Contacts app on macOS and iOS, or Thunderbird. It is, for contacts, the equivalent of what CalDAV does for the calendar.

Once the connection is set up, contacts travel both ways in vCard format: whatever you create or change in Foral shows up on your device, and vice versa.

What you need

  • Foral’s CardDAV address (URL).
  • Your Foral email and password, used to authenticate the connection.

Add the account

The steps vary slightly from app to app, but the principle is the same:

  1. In your contacts app, open the option to add a new account and choose the CardDAV type.
  2. Enter the server (Foral’s CardDAV address). The app discovers your address book automatically.
  3. Enter your Foral email and password.
  4. Confirm. The app downloads the contacts and keeps them in sync from then on.

On iOS, you will find this option under Settings → Contacts → Accounts → Add Account → Other → Add CardDAV Account. On macOS, use Contacts → Settings → Account → CardDAV type.

How syncing works

  • Each user has one address book, which is synced in full.
  • The app checks periodically for changes and downloads only what has changed, saving data and battery.
  • Contacts created or edited in the native app are saved to Foral and become visible in the browser.

If the account is not created

If the app says it could not verify your name or password, check:

  • That you are using a valid HTTPS address.
  • That your Foral email and password are correct.
  • That you chose the CardDAV account type (and not CalDAV or IMAP).

If the problem persists, contact your administrator to confirm the correct CardDAV address for your organisation.
